While there are many articles on Scrapbooking around the Internet, one question I seem to get asked the most is; How Do I Get Started Scrapbooking?

I’ve found very few articles on this subject. However, getting started scrapbooking is not hard at all. Here is how to start your first scrapbook project.

Start by gathering some scrapbook supplies. This can be anything that YOU like. A good starting point is some of those loose pictures you have stashed out of the way. I like to try and keep my scrapbooks to one or two themes. For example, one idea might be; “Fourth of July at the Lake.” Organize and categorize your scrapbook materials. Scrapbooks can cover any subject you want. If you keep your scrapbook to one or two subjects, then you can probably bypass this step. A scrapbook over a large subject like “Family” can be broken down into manageable categories such as school days, first job, first loves, family vacations, etc. Visualize then Design the layout of your scrapbook. I like to take as much time as needed to design my scrapbooks. I like to try and visualize how I want my scrapbook to look and how I want it laid out. I like to use short phrases or sentences to describe the pictures. I also use titles for every page. Keep the page titles and pictures relevant. You wouldn’t want pictures of your first day at the job under “Our Bermuda Vacation.” This is also the time to pick out any decorations you might want in your scrapbook. Don’t overdo it!

Scrapbooking Tips

Keep your photo’s in an acid free photo box for best results. Shoe boxes are also good if you’re on a budget. Be Yourself. If you’re making the scrapbook for yourself, then make it the way you want it! There’s no law that says you must make a scrapbook this way or that way. This is the beauty of scrapbooking. Pick one photo to be the main theme of your scrapbook. Think before you cut. New scrapbookers are so excited, they tear into their photo’s and start cropping or cutting them out in all types of shapes. Before cutting any photo, have a designated place for it. Makes sure it’s going to work in that spot. I prefer to matt the photo rather than cut the photo itself. Don’t cut the Polaroids! The chemicals inside can ruin other pictures. Again think about matting and overlays. KISS – Keep It Simple Scrap bookers! Nothing screams “AMATEUR” more than a scrapbook with every design, sticker and decoration imaginable. Stick to a few shapes and designs for each theme.

Scrapbooking is fun and addictive. Anyone can do it and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to do it right because you decide which way is the right way to scrapbook!

Western scrapbooking pages, free of charge, can be found on the Internet and in scrapbooking magazines. Scrapbooking is one of those hobbies in which people enjoy sharing pages they have created. Whether novice or professional, they want to help others have similar happy experiences.

Sources of Western Scrapbooking Pages

Western scrapbooking pages, free for copying, appear in many places on the Internet. You might want to try these options.

1. Galleries: Scrapbooking galleries are probably one of the best places to find western scrapbooking pages free. These galleries feature photos of successful scrapbooking pages, free for you to borrow from their creators. Scrapbook has nearly 350,000 images in their gallery, including both layouts and digital layouts of scrapbooking pages. A search there on the word “western” produced 214 western scrapbooking pages at the time this article was written. A mouse click at this gallery enlarges any photo so you can easily see the elements.

2. Forums and Chat Rooms: You may also find western scrapbooking pages free in forums and chat rooms. Sometimes, if you are cooperative, a forum member may even volunteer to create a western scrapbooking page free to meet your specific needs. Forum members are often scrapbooking “addicts” who love to share their talents.

3. Scrapbooking Kits: Online retailers who sell scrapbooking kits often feature 2 or 3 kits, showing large pictures of scrapbooking pages within the kits. The pages are copyrighted, but the ideas can be adapted. Digital scrapbooking kits are sometimes free for the taking as an introduction to a site’s digital elements. You may find just the western scrapbooking pages you want on a kit site.

4. Scrapbooking Stamp Retailers: Online retailers of stamps often show scrapbooking pages to illustrate what their stamps will add to a layout. We found lovely western scrapbooking pages free at one of these sites.

5. Scrapbooking Supplies Retailers: Internet retailers who sell an array of scrapbooking supplies follow the same practice: placing photos of samples to spark ideas, or giving 2 or 3 scrapbooking pages free as an introductory offer. Browse these retailers’ sites and you will come away with many ideas for western scrapbooking pages.

Do-It-Yourself Digital Western Scrapbooking Pages

Digital western scrapbooking pages can be created at your computer if you are handy with a computer graphics program. We use Adobe PhotoShop.

Begin by creating scrapbooking paper. Make your paper 12″ x 12″ for now. It can be reduced later if necessary. Create digital scrapbooking paper in several themes for your scrapbooking pages. These three ideas will get you started.

1. Western Riding Scrapbooking Pages

Make the paper background medium to light brown with a sandy texture.

Place a clear layer in front of the brown, and add words to it such as “Western” or “cowboy” to carry the theme. You won’t need many words. Vary the font for interest. This layer is optional on your scrapbooking page.

Find 1 or 2 clipart or photo images of cowboy hats. Then find a cowboy boot, saddle, and spurs. Add a rope if you wish. Once you have the graphics, create a pattern on your brown paper, repeating it at pleasing intervals.

2. Horseshoe Scrapbooking Pages

Make the paper background light brown, and then render clouds with light brown and ivory.

Find a clipart image of a steel gray horseshoe. Create a pattern over the clouds, repeating the horseshoe at intervals until the paper is covered.

3. Man and Beast Shoes Scrapbooking Pages

Begin by creating horseshoe scrapbooking paper. Add small clipart images of cowboy boots at wide intervals over top of the horseshoes. It’s good to have 3 different pairs of cowboy boots for interest.

Completing Western Scrapbooking Pages

Once your scrapbooking paper is ready, you can make digital western scrapbooking pages on it. Place cropped, scanned photos on each page. Overlap photos, with a piece of journaling placed to one side. Add a page title in bold, western font. Half a dozen wild mustangs in ivory or off-white might be placed at a page bottom, as though dashing in from one side. Add digital stickers to your scrapbooking pages and move to the next.

Tip: Western scrapbooking pages look best when “busy” cowboy paper is used intermittently with plain, more colorful backgrounds.

Christmas is one of the most joyful events in a year. This season gives meaning to life and erupts in love and the festive activities – food, gift and sharing – the perfect time to record in a scrapbook. Aside from the fact that you’ll have plenty of photos to use, you’ll also be able to make use of many scrapbooking ideas to emboss onto your Christmas theme. First of all, in creating a scrapbook based on a festive season, a theme will help guide your way to creating a memorable scrapbook. Second, the use of a theme enables you to prepare beforehand the materials you may need for your scrapbook. Here are some scrapbooking ideas for your Christmas themes.

12 Days of Christmas
May it be your first Christmas with a boyfriend or a new husband or a newborn baby; having a 12 Days of Christmas as a theme oozes a lot of scrapbooking ideas. Record the 12 Days of Christmas with surprise gifts for your honey and jot down the details of each surprise gift. If it’s your first Christmas with the family, prepare different special meals for the 12 Days and have a cookbook type of scrapbook.

Christmas Tree
Bizarre, but totally creative, using a Christmas tree as a theme is quite unique. Decide on the color of your tree and the materials to use – whether real fig leaves, aesthetic leaves or cut-out materials. Use ribbons as branches and each photo as the fruit. Draw branch lines on the background for a more effective “tree” outlook.

Scrapbooking as a hobby has been around for decades but, today, the ideal way to scrapbook is to encourage each individual to be creative in the Scrapbook Themes that they use. Gone are the simple black and white scrapbook pages; now colored and textured papers can be used to enhance your carefully chosen photos. And lovely themed stickers and other creative embellishments are woven in to create a truly unique, ‘one-of-a-kind’ memory album.

There really is no limit to the types of Scrapbook Themes you can use in your scrapbooking projects. Whether you choose to highlight one specific event or you decide to compose a large, family album covering years of memories – the options are many and the choice is yours.

FAMILY SCRAPBOOK THEMES

For your own personal scrapbooks, you may choose to create family album sections for your Scrapbook Themes. Each occasion can be given its own scrapbook album section: seasons, holidays, birthdays, family reunions, sporting events, etc.

If a family album is too large of a project to tackle, consider creating Scrapbook Themes specifically for each child. A baby’s ‘firsts’, including their first smile, a lock of hair, first words or baby booties are excellent additions to a baby themed scrapbook.

As the children grow older, the family Scrapbook Themes could include such things as: awards, graduations, certificates and other accomplishments that can be inserted into protective covers to showcase and protect these precious memories for years to come. Make sure to include photos of your child with school friends and special teachers as well.

INDIVIDUAL SCRAPBOOK THEMES

Individual Scrapbook Themes make great small albums and are perfect gift ideas. Themes like a baby’s birth, graduation, marriage, promotions, retirements or other momentous occasions make wonderful unique and memorable gifts.

You can easily and inexpensively make a small gift with a ‘brag book’ accordion style scrapbook album. Purchase coordinating stickers, rubber stamps or charms to make your Scrapbook Themes more tangible. For example, for a wedding scrapbook, you could include such items as the couple’s wedding invitation and newspaper announcement which will be cherished mementos. Use paper doilies, lace, gift wrapping paper and pressed flowers to embellish the pages in keeping with the theme of the scrapbook.

WHEN SELECTING SCRAPBOOK THEMES

Scrapbooking is more than just a fun (and addicting) hobby – it is a way to preserve precious memories. But you do not have to choose Scrapbook Themes just because they are common or can be purchased in a pre-packaged kit. It’s more important to choose the memories that you feel are worth the extra effort of preserving in a scrapbook that will last a lifetime and then determine from that what the scrapbook theme should be.

Scrapbooking Your Winter Solstice

Winter scrapbooking themes and layouts are a spectacular way to envelope the spirit of the solstice season into your celebrations. Ever thought about creating your own winter wonderland scrapbook? What does your winter solstice mean to you? Winter brings many wonders, including the rain, bare trees, and sometimes a clear, cold night sky blanketing the earth with heavenly lights.

For astronomers and others, the connection between astronomical events and the season held great importance. Archaeological sites such as New Grange in Ireland and Stonehenge in Britain are two examples of the stories that have grown up around our understandings of the winter season. Similarly, we build our own meanings into the pages of our winter scrapbook of what this winter season means to us.

Winter scrapbooking usually brings on thoughts of the holidays, the most prominent among others, being Christmas, New Years, and Valentines Day. These, of course, are sprinkled with many other celebrations such as Chanukah, Kwanza, Epiphany, President’s Day, and Ash Wednesday. Touching on, for the most part, the three most recognized holidays (or etymologically speaking, “holy days,”) in our winter scrapbooking, will be Christmas, New Years and Valentines Day. The scrapbooking projects ought to be applicable to any given holiday though. Again, as the focus is on creating a winter wonderland scrapbook, consider in what way your own holiday holds meaning for you and how you can show that in your page. Following are some idea sparkers.

Check out these winter scrapbooking projects for Christmas.

Not sure what to do with old Christmas and other holiday cards? Create scrapbooking gifts tags for the next year. Cut out the front of the card in creative shapes, like stars, letters, toys and more. Write to and from on the back. Cut out the main picture on the card (such as Santa or the Nativity), punch a hole in it and tie to your packages.

Not sure how you can afford the stamps for sending cards this season? With some creative scrapbooking, you can make post-cards out of those old cards (whether holiday, birthday, anniversary or other). It can be pretty, humorous, whatever you want it to be.

You can also make gift bags for the following year as well as scrapbooking embellishments, table place cards and tree ornaments for your next holiday party.

Finally, you could donate your cards for scrapbooking and other craft projects to local schools, senior centers, church groups, a local scrapbook club, and various youth centered groups such as the girl and boy scouts of America.

New Years Scrapbooking

New Years winter scrapbooking projects include creating a scrapbooking timeline or what has also been called a time-capsule. Included in this year in review for your scrapbook might be headlines of important news events of the past year, receipts showing the price of various grocery items such as milk and bread, brochures or postcards from family vacations, your children’s drawings and any other type of memorabilia to capture the vintage moment of that present time.

Ideas for your scrapbooking treasures can involve your best and worst memories, a favorite movie, past-time, and major milestones. Scrap your New Year’s resolutions and the hopes and dreams for the coming year. Use photos in your scrapbooking timeline as you photograph your home, car, clothes, furniture pieces and hairstyles.

Valentines Day Scrapbooking Ideas

The month of February brings with it the celebration of Valentines Day. There exist many things about this day to love. Here are a few Valentines Day scrapbooking ideas to consider for your Valentines Day scrapbook or for a valentine gift idea.

Find a photograph. The photo does not have to have been taken on Valentine’s Day. One from another occasion of the both of you will work just fine. For instance, I have a photo of my husband and me at my sister’s wedding reception before we were married. That would be a lovely picture in a Valentines Day scrapbook page.

Choose a page title. Pick something, for example, from a favorite or popular love song, a phrase from a poem or a novel or use common terms like Soul-mates, Sweethearts, I Love You, and Be Mine.

Choose romantic page elements such as hearts or roses. Other scrapbooking elements for a romantic theme would be white lace, satin ribbon, red bows or Victorian-style accents. For an entirely different project I used small dried roses in a layout and it turned out beautiful. These elements work well when you are working with shadowboxes.

Add color. Red is a popular color for Valentine’s Day. For something different, try more white and pink using red or even black as an accent. Scenes from Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink come to mind for ideas in color and colorful phrases.

Add your Valentines Day cards for decoration. Make a pocket on the page for holding the cards you gave to each other. Include your children’s Valentine Cards and how they feel about the holiday as well. Return to it and read the sentiments inside anytime you want.

This next one is a favorite of mine. Write love letters. Do this through journaling in your Valentine layout. Use title ideas for prompts in your scrapbook journaling. Also include handwritten love letters given at any time of the year or further back. A form of this idea I have on one of my scrapbook pages. During the time my husband and I were dating, we left quick little notes to each other using photos from Webshots in our emails. I saved these and put them on at least a couple pages of my scrapbook. I used the phrase “You’ve Got Mail” from a movie title with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Finally, dedicate a page in your winter wonderland scrapbook to your Valentine expressing the reasons why you love him or her.

Again, in your winter scrapbooking quest, whatever you choose to reminisce in your winter wonderland scrapbook, remember that it is your winter solstice you are scrapbooking and journaling about. Let these ideas inspire you this winter season to create a dialogue between you and those you love or at least open awareness to your own thoughts and feelings. Happy Scrapping!

Scrapbooking soccer is a less popular theme than most, so it may be a little harder to find resources. The great news is that there are some fast and easy scrapbooking things you can do that can be incorporated into a soccer theme. Choose any of the following techniques to create unique soccer pages:

- Choose a picture to serve as the focal-point and accessorize with a variety of related photos. Tell a story by putting the focal point in the upper left corner. Then use smaller photos, text, and embellishments from left to right. This would be a great way to emphasize an exciting game winning goal.

- Always mat your focal point photo. Leave other photos unmatted to draw even more attention to the focal point photo. To cut corners, do not trim away the white border that is sometimes found around photos. White is a great mat color for a soccer page!

- Instead of using an adhesive to anchor down tournament and other award ribbons, use brads. They work just as well if not better than adhesive and they fit perfectly into the soccer theme.

- Create stitching for a more authentic look. This can be done in different ways. The obvious needle and thread will give you the look you want, but sewing is not easy for some. If sewing is not your thing and you have a steady hand, use a very fine tipped pen to draw your own stitching. Rubbing decals for a stitched look are also available.

This is just a small sampling of ideas and techniques that can be used when scrapbooking soccer. Use these tips to help generate other techniques into your soccer themed pages.

Beginning with a good theme is highly essential to be able to start planning for a successful 18th birthday party. With the perfect theme (this means something that your daughter or son has approved), you are well on your way to a memorable birthday party.

Here are some suggestions that would make your baby’s (don’t they just **** that term?) 18th birthday party a blast:

1. Picnic/Scrapbook 18th Birthday Party theme

Your daughter/son would be highly grateful if you would provide an 18th birthday party that would be fun, and at the same time, something that would provide sweet memories, and what a good way to provide lasting memories – you could suggest your child’s guests to sign and create a scrapbook for the celebrant.

Most teenagers love scrapbooking and they would surely be occupied with this great idea. This would be more fun if the party would be held outdoors where everyone could just sprawl on a blanket provided for on the grassy grounds, or on a picnic table on the park. The great thing about this 18th birthday party theme is that, you could save on decors and all those other expensive party stuff.

2. The Easy 18th Birthday Party theme

If you are a member of a certain religious organization, you could actually ask for the social hall in your chapel to be used for your teenager’s 18th birthday party. The place would be free of charge and all you would have to worry about are food and CD’s to keep the teenagers busy.

3. Hippie 18th Birthday Party theme

Go retro by using this theme. Let all the guests dress up as hippies and let them go home with peace sign pendants and beaded necklaces.

4. Diva 18th Birthday Party theme

Make the celebrant feel like a star by inviting guests that would dress up like they are going to an awards’ night. Your daughter would surely be amazed.

There are so many ways of remembering that 18th year in a person’s life. A party with the perfect 18th birthday party theme would be a good aspect to begin with. And with the loving parents’ presence, she would surely love every moment of that wonderful 18th birthday party.

Are you new to the scrapbooking hobby and don’t know how to start? For your cute scrapbook ideas, here are your must-haves.

First, it sparks your own imagination and give you the drive you need to finish finish your current scrapbook projects and move on to the next with ease and confidence. And if your running out of ideas, you can always rely on scrapbook kits. Oftentimes scrapbook kits can help you finish a long-dead project, or even help bring out your creative side to give you the resolve to finish. There are many different types of kits for your to choose from including album kits, page kits, and embellishment kits.

a. Scrapbook Album Kits. The album kits are great for setting a base for the scrapbook. They give you the foundation, and allow you to ‘build the house’.. Use these kits to get you started, and then let your imagination and creativity flow free as you create your first few scrapbooks. Let them help guide you, and give you ideas for the future.

b. Scrapbooking Page Kits. Page kits are great for getting the ball rolling. Using a page kit for one page can inspire creativity for the next twenty. Page kits, like album kits, have been known to come in different levels. Some page kits are for beginners, and do all of the page planning for you. Others give you an outline and let you add the finishing touches. Try to challenge yourself. Use a page kit for one page, then use a similar theme for that entire section of your scrapbook. See if you can’t make a page that looks even better on your own without the use of a kit!

c. Scrapbook Embellishment Kits. Scrapbooking embellishment kits are generally for those who have experience in page design and know the basic information about scrapbooking. Embellishment kits usually come with stickers, stencils, and other design pieces to help aid you in the creation of your page or of your entire book. Embellishment scrapbook kits are great for creating a ’scrapbook theme’.

2. Scrapbook Pages. There are many different types of scrapbooking pages. Depending on what you are attempting to do with your scrapbook, you may want to look into kits, or themed pages. Kits and themed pages provide you with a basic outline for each page, and allow you to expand on what has been laid down for you. Your goal should be to take what they have given you with the kit of theme, and make it more personal. When purchasing scrapbook pages for your scrapbook, you should keep two things in mind. All of your pages should be on acid free paper, because acidity can cause your photos and layouts to fade with time. Also make sure that the pages are lignin-free, because lignin makes the papers turn yellow with time. Below are the types of scrapbooking pages.

a. Cardstock Paper. Carstock is a heavyweight, acid-free paper that is usually used for scrapbook backgrounds and comes in many different colors and textures.

b. Patterned Paper. Acid-free, patterned paper comes in a large variety of different designs and textures. Patterned paper is mostly used as different scrapbooking backgrounds, and accents to backgrounds.

c. Transparencies. Transparencies are clear acetate sheets that have mostly been used for different overlays, or windows. Get creative with transparencies. There are many different options.

d. Vellum. Vellum is mostly used for layering and stamping. Vellum is a wonderful paper for softening the look of other bolder colors on your scrapbook page.

3. Scrapbooking Page Themes. All sorts of different scrapbooking page themes areavailable online. Pretty much anything under the sun for any occasion is accessible online either for free or at a low cost. Take a look around at the different vendors and see if anything appeals to you. There are many choices available for holiday seasons and for baby scrapbooks.

Remember to be creative and wise in your choice with papers, and to make sure that any paper you choose is both acid free and lignin free to preserve your scrapbook for a very long time. Take your time to use your imagination and create scrapbooks that will last a lifetime. Happy scrapbooking!
